Imagine science is destroyed by nuclear war. The labs are gone, the universities are gone, almost everyone who understood the context is gone. A generation later, survivors try to piece it back together. They still use the right words: physics, chemistry, biology. But there are enormous gaps nobody can fill, and the different factions argue bitterly over incompatible fragments of a lost whole.
That thought experiment belongs to Alasdair MacIntyre, writing in 1981. His point is not actually about science. He is saying that this has already happened to moral philosophy. The catastrophe was the Enlightenment. Secular modernity stripped ethics of Aristotle’s teleology -- the idea that humans have a natural purpose toward which good living tends -- and of theistic grounding -- the idea that moral law has a source. But it kept the vocabulary. Duty, rights, obligation, the good. The words survived the explosion. The framework did not.
This is why modern moral debates feel like fighting in different languages. It is not that either side is irrational. It is that both sides are waving fragments of traditions that no longer share a common foundation.
That is where eight lectures on Aristotle brought me. And it is not where I expected to end up.
Why I did this course
I came in thinking: Aristotle, logic, syllogisms, probably useful for sharpening arguments. I ended up somewhere stranger. By the final lecture I was looking at an ancient Greek who had built an architecture so integrated -- logic, nature, metaphysics, psychology, ethics, politics -- that each floor depended on the one below, and whose absence from the modern world might explain the confusion I had always assumed was just part of being alive.
The course is eight lectures by Dr. James Orr, delivered through Peterson Academy (link below if you want access). Orr is the kind of teacher who assumes you can handle complexity but does not use complexity to hide behind. Each lecture lays one floor of the cathedral.
The logic that is not just logic
The opening lectures on Aristotle’s logic are the part that most people expect, and still the part that lands with the most force. Aristotle was the first to systematise what valid inference looks like. Before him, people reasoned -- they just could not say precisely what reasoning was.
But his logic is not a separate tool you pick up and put down. It is connected to his metaphysics. Aristotle thinks definitions -- real definitions, not verbal ones -- are possible because the world has real structure. You can define “human” as “rational animal” because rationality is genuinely what is essential to human beings, not just a label we find convenient. The structure of good reasoning tracks the structure of reality. That is either a very ambitious claim or a very humble one, depending on how you look at it.
I have been doing the Hicks Logic course before this, which gave me the formal bones -- syllogisms, rules of valid inference, propositional logic (https://kalinowski.co.uk/p/logic-course-stephen-hicks). What Orr added was the metaphysical ground beneath the bones. Why does logic work? Aristotle has an answer. It is not an arbitrary convention. It reflects how things actually are.
The soul as form, not ghost
The middle lectures -- on Aristotle’s philosophy of nature and his psychology -- are where I kept stopping to reread passages.
Aristotle’s theory of the soul is one of those ideas that sounds technical and turns out to be disarmingly practical. He does not mean soul in the sense of a ghost that inhabits a body. He means the organising principle of a living thing. The soul of an eye is sight -- what it is for an eye to be functioning as an eye. The soul of a human being is the set of capacities that make a human being alive in the specifically human way: nutrition, perception, locomotion, and above all, reason.
This matters for ethics because it means there is no hard line between “what you are” and “how you should live.” If reason is your defining capacity, then a life lived against reason is a life working against your own nature. The virtues are not arbitrary rules imposed from outside. They are the traits that activate the specifically human form of flourishing.
Robert Sapolsky, in Behave , shows how much of human behaviour is downstream of biology -- hormones, neurons, evolutionary pressures. That is all real. But Sapolsky’s framework does not tell you what to do with it. Aristotle’s does. The two are not in conflict; they are answering different questions. Sapolsky tells you how you arrived where you are. Aristotle tells you what direction to go from there.
Why the virtues are not a list
Modern virtue ethics -- the revival that Anscombe started in 1958 and MacIntyre developed in the 1980s -- is sometimes taught as if the virtues are a catalogue you memorise: courage, justice, temperance, prudence. That misses the point.
Aristotle’s virtues are not a list. They are a description of what a person looks like when their capacities are properly developed and working together. Courage is not courage because it is on the list. Courage is courage because a life that tends toward either cowardice or recklessness is a diminished life for a creature with our kind of rational agency.
Jonathan Haidt, in The Righteous Mind (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0141039167/ref=nosim?tag=mpkalinowski-21), argues that moral intuitions come first and reasons come second. We feel that something is wrong, then construct justifications. Aristotle would agree with the structure but interpret it differently. The person of good character does not work out what courage is and then act courageously. They have been trained to perceive danger accurately and respond well, and their reasons reflect that perception. Character shapes what you see before you decide what to do.
Robin Hanson and Kevin Simler, in The Elephant in the Brain (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0197551955/ref=nosim?tag=mpkalinowski-21), make a similar move: much of what we think is reasoning is rationalisation. The elephant (the unconscious) is driving; the rider (consciousness) is narrating. Aristotle’s response would be: then train the elephant. That is what virtuous habituation is. The goal is to get the elephant and the rider aligned -- which takes years of practice, not insight.
The hidden architecture of everything
The final two lectures -- on Aristotle’s legacy -- are the ones that stayed with me longest.
Saul Kripke’s “Naming and Necessity” (1980) reopened the whole of metaphysics. He showed that water is necessarily H2O -- not by convention, but by nature. Gold necessarily has atomic number 79. If these are necessary truths, then things have real essences. Natural kinds are real, not invented. Aristotle was right: the world has structure, and science carves it at actual joints.
Once essences are back, the neo-Aristotelian theory of powers and dispositions follows. Objects do not need external laws to act -- they have causal powers built into their natures. An acorn becomes an oak because of what it is, not because a law in physics orders it to. This sounds abstract; its implications are not. It means that the Cartesian picture of the world -- inert matter governed by external laws -- may itself be a historical accident, not the permanent truth it has presented itself as.
Will Storr, in The Status Game (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0008276366/ref=nosim?tag=mpkalinowski-21), describes how every human social group generates a game with its own success criteria, and how humans orient their lives around winning those games. Aristotle would say: yes, but not all games are equal. A game that activates your rational and social capacities in a genuinely demanding way is better than one that does not, because it is closer to what we actually are. The status instinct is real; it does not settle what the status should be for.
Kahneman, in Thinking, Fast and Slow (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0141033576/ref=nosim?tag=mpkalinowski-21), maps the machinery of System 1 and System 2. Fast thinking does most of the work; slow thinking corrects it selectively. What Aristotle adds is a goal: the aim of moral education is to make System 1 good -- not just fast, but well-trained. You want the fast system to fire well because the person who has to deliberate about whether to be honest has already lost something.
What I actually came away with
The phrase Dr. Orr uses in the final lecture is that Aristotle buries his undertakers. Every 500 years something happens that seems to end him. He is lost to the medieval West for centuries. The Church bans him, then reclaims him. The Scientific Revolution dismantles his cosmology. Positivism declares him pre-scientific. And each time, he comes back through a different door.
This course was eight lectures. I came in looking for logic. I came out with something I did not expect: a framework that held everything else I had read this year in a more coherent arrangement than I had managed on my own. The connections to Behave, to Haidt, to Kahneman, to Storr -- they were there before. Aristotle made them visible.
I later went back through the same material from a more practical angle, less "what I learned" and more "what to actually do with it."
